So Whose Heard of Google Glass?

In a somewhat unrelated article this week we get a real close up at what’s really going on inside some of the world’s largest tech industries. Google has just revealed that they have glasses. And not just seeing eye glasses, glasses that take pictures, play movies, enable you to chat with friends, social network, and yes see.

The Glasses are super portable and can be taken anywhere. On their website Google shows videos of pilots, acrobats, artists, sky divers and persons in hot air balloons trying out the glasses. Google is even having a competition giving away 8,000 unites of “Google Glass” so anyone who comes up with the best reasoning on Twitter. #IfIHadGlass and say in 50 words or less what you’d do if you had Google Glass.
Oh, and $1,500. Looks like you gotta pay for play in this contest. Regardless this is sure to be a game changer in the world of electronics, not to mention social media, apps, and sure to entice feuds between tech companies worldwide.

How It Feels Through Glass

The whole thing is super futureistic. I kinda feel like the Jetsons, or...

Either way I cant wait to see how this is gonna change the electronics game. More information on "Project Glass" can be found Here...Project Glass Wiki . More on the Contest Here

Whats the Deal with Love Park

So three weeks after the removal of the Christmas village we skaters are still getting pushed around by security figures telling us not to skate in Love Park. I’m entirely perplexed by this ever changing playground of rules. For one, I’ve skated love park many a Saturdays with no consequence and made plenty of skater acquaintances doing it. However yesterday when I went to meet up with the guys over at Not 1 Philly Parkour  I was greeted by a police officer who told me to keep my board off the ground. I did what he asked but I just didn’t get it . Was it really that big of a deal? The Christmas Village has long since been gone and the only remnants of it were the ugly ‘You Know You Love It.” Noodle. Who authorized Kraft to put that blight there? How soon can we get it torn down?  Anyway there was hardly anyone in the park so I don’t see what the big deal was. There's even a new green 'Fairmount Park Rules and Regulations" board. No biking, no in line skates, no roller blades, no skateboards  no scooters, no alcoholic beverages, no smoking... Its like they want us to just sit there and enjoy the fountain or something.  I left and didn't soon return. I hope our skate haven returns to its original skater friendly dome-plex soon.

Rob Dyredek giving Skaters a Bad Rap?

Sell out. or Enterprising Genius?
Our beloved Rob Dyrdek has gone from Alien work shop / DC protégé to MTV object of obsession. He currently has three reality TV shows on the Air, all on the same network. MTV. Rob Dyrdeck has a networth of over $15 Million according to http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-athletes/skateboarders/rob-dyrdek-net-worth/. While this pales in significance to established reality Tv junkies such as Paris Hilton’s $100 Million dollar estimate, and does beat global super annoyance Snooki’s net worth of $4 Million dollars ( $150,000 an episode can you believe it? ), and doesn’t make at a dent at wild boy Bam Margera’s net worth of $45 Million, one can’t  help but wonder if he’s sold out to some extent; trading the deck for the lime light. After Rob and Big started, Rob was hardly seen skating until the 2011 Alien Workshop film Mind Field. Even in the show it seemed more focused on poorly scripted humor and antics than actual skate board culture ( though it was immensely entertaining) .  As time went on Rob and Big came to an end and Rob Dyrdeks fantasy factory began. And this was wonderful I mean skaters rejoiced. The setting was a private warehouse that Rob had transformed into a private skate plaza. It was beautiful and skater fans everywhere rejoiced thinking that they’d actually see some skating happening. However we were again disappointed. As the seasons went on the episodes became less focused on rob skating the amazing fantasy factory and more on how he can almost destroy it, and how many time he can launch himself and others into the ball pit and cause turmoil among his peers. The actual skating In the show was reduced to ten second montages between scenes, and some of the skaters in the montages aren’t Rob Dyrdek . The nail in the coffin is his newest show ridiculousness where the only skating is of young kids nearly killing themselves and Rob and his cronies laughing at their misfortune. I mean it’s a funny show but so many of these lazy internet TV shows have popped and seeing how Rob Dyrdeck showed no hesitation in jumping on the band wagon,  it seems that Rob is more focused on getting his name and his brand maximum exposure at the cost of losing his core skater fan base. But I can understand, with break through entrepreneur  / skaters like Stevie Williams  and Andrew Reynolds who both keep their personal financial situation under tight wraps despite their many assets, Rob must feel a bit of “friendly competition” from the guys making more bank who maintain a strong skater fan base =P .

Kick Flips for Cancer

A Philly based Community group is organizing a skateboarding tournament to combat breast cancer and needs your help. The University City Kick Flips for Cancer fundraiser is a daylong game of S.K.A.T.E skateboarding tournament, where participants will pay a nominal registration fee to compete to win a $500.00 Cash prize. We are partnering with the Drexel University step team and other student organizations to host and manage the event. Our goal is to raise $5,000 for breast cancer research the day of the fundraiser through raffles contests, participating skateboarder’s entry fees, and donations from attendees. To raise money for the event the group is using a method called Crowd sourcing. Basically they ask everyday people like you and me to help them raise enough money for permits and other expenses and in return you'd get an event wrist band, a T shirt maybe a few random complete board give aways, who knows the possibilities are endless. As of now the Event is slated for May 11th 2013 in the Miles Mack park on 36th and Aspen in the Mantua Community of West Philadelphia. There will be food, games, live musical performances and other surprises. For more information on the event and how you can donate to the cause, visit www.indiegogo.com/kickflipsforcancer or www.philadelphiacase.com

Hope to see you all there

Totally Got Chased out of Love park

Fellow skaters, it seems out ever uphill battle against security guards will... well never end. yesterday a couple friends and I get to love park and start what we feel is a pretty good session. Nose 5-0's simple tricks down the three stair. I was skating flat getting warmed up. Next think I know, I look up and everyone's making a run for it. Now I didn't even see the Security guards ( or know that they cared that we skated Love park since we do every Saturday ) . Long story short they caught up w. one of my boys took info then let him go. Its lame that they still don't want us skating there, and the skate park next to the art museum isn't even close to being finished so where are we supposed to go Philadelphia? Here's hoping we find a compromise soon.

Love Park, Our skate Haven Returns.

Skaters are Buzzing about this upcomming weekend. Why? for several reasons. First, its the first weekend the Christmas Village is competely out of Love park, so our saturday skate haven has been returned to its rightful state, and two, its supposed to be in the 50's this weekend. Last weekend we had snow and its been wet these past few 2013 weekends but this weekend should deffiently prove to be something worth the wait. The Team and I will be out saturday as well as sunday skating and filming so if you'd like to be captured on camera look for us around 15th and market after 1pm. Hopefully we'll catch someone skating the Love gap now that the fountain is empty. Either way we'll deffinetly post some gnarley footage in the comming weeks.

Lil Wayne Really Loves Baker

Yes ladies and gentle men, our beloved rapper turned skateboarder has gotten another face tattoo. The question is who cares right? I mean he already has 9 stars on his left side hair line and a flower inside his ear on the same side, the word “Misunderstood” on his left side hair line, the “Young Money” Logo as well as “soo woo” going down the left side of his neck ( already were at 13 tattoos ) a “W” for our favorite rappers favorite letter, as well as his name “ Weezy”, the words “ Fear God” one word tattooed per eyelid, and a C for his last name ( Carter ) and his mothers first name ( Cita ), a smiley face tattooed on his inner lip, the words “ I am Music” over his right eye and two tear drops beneath ( one for each person in his family whose died… but I thought It worked a little different ) , a tribal symbol, the dots meant to represent “laugh, think cry, the name Tune and some cracks tattooed going down his neck, the word Lucky Me paying homage to Jay- Z ( 28 tattoos so far ). He also has “ I am Pimp behind his right ear, the name Orleans on his side burn and the New Orleans Saints Logo, a gun tattooed on his neck ( why? ) , three glow in the dark stars and a set of lips on his neck, a tear drop near his mouth, another crack on his forehead, a heart on the right side, a cross tattooed on his forehead, “999” behind his left ear, a smiley face next to the heart, lightning coming from a cloud that we forgot to mention, the word “imperfect “– at this point we decided to stop counting and did some research. It appears the only one we left out was a recent, “TruckFit” logo and character behind his left ear. That makes 45 tattoos in total from the neck up… err 46. Two days ago a photo of Lil’ Wayne’s newest tattoo paying homage to the Baker Skate Boarding Company was dispersed all over the internet causing everyone to question how committed he actually is to the sport versus just trying to appear committed. The tattoo is of Baker’s “BAKE’D “Design. Five squares spelling our BAKED. The design was featured on skateboards, hoodies T-shirts and as you could imagine cause quite the emphatic uproar among the stoners within the skateboarding culture. I’m sure Baker didn’t mind the free publicity either, however I wonder how Andrew Reynolds feels about the whole thing. Wayne has been an avid skateboarding fan over the past few years, most recently stating that he would put rap on the backburner for the sport. He has been seen more than a few times with pro skaters soaking up culture, and falling on his backside. He is quoted as saying, “I picked up the skateboard and I thought it would be a hobby, but it’s a lifestyle. You have to be fully committed. In order to be fully committed, you have to live that lifestyle. What these young kids say right now, you have to be about that life. I guess I’m about that life," he said. Personally, Im still not convinced. “It’s kinda putting rap on the backburner, that’s all. Rap is a taking backseat to skating. That’s alright. But I kind of feel I deserve that. … I think fans deserve some peace from me." However many still believe his venture into skateboarding is nothing more than a marketing plot, or a way to see increased profits in years to come. Admittedly he’s pretty bad <--- ( footage of wayne sucking) at the sport though rumors are circulating that Theotis Beastly and Paul Rodriguez are giving the up and comer some firsthand pointers. Who knows, maybe he’ll even have a part in the New Baker Video. All Jokes and speculation aside, click here to see for yourself exactly how many tattoos Lil Wayne has.

Rob Dyrdeck, $15 Million Dollar Man

For those of you who have been living under a rock, Rob Dyrdek is an MTV reality star and entrepreneur who has amassed an impressive $15 million net worth according to several celebrity outlets as of Oct. 2012. Born in Ohio on June 28, 1978, Dyrdek left his home at the age of 16 to become a professional skateboarder., "I was a pretty driven young man. I was so focused on becoming a pro skateboarder. I would sit in school and think about all the tricks I was going to do, then I’d get out of school and skate until they made me come inside." At the age of 12, Rob acquired sponsorship from the same company Neil Blender rode for and began his skateboarding career. A few years later, Dyrdek and Blender quit their board sponsor and created Alien Workshop – Rob’s current board company. At the age of 16, Dyrdek decided to forgo his senior year of high school and instead moved to Southern California to pursue his professional skate career. Soon after moving, Dyrdek began to ride for Droors Clothing (now known as DC Shoes), where he also began his exploring entrepreneurship through shoe design. This led Dyrdek to launch various short-lived companies, including a hip-hop record label and a skate shop. But that was only the beginning. Dyrdek first starred in an MTV reality series, entitled Rob & Big (aired November 2006 to April 2008), with his best friend and bodyguard Christopher "Big Black" Boykin, as well as his cousin, Chris "Drama" Pfaff and friend Rashawn "Bam Bam" Davis. After three seasons Boykin chose to leave the show when his longtime girlfriend had a baby. In February 2009 Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory, featuring Dyrdek, Pfaff, and his Dyrdek Enterprise staff, was first aired. The "Fantasy Factory" is a converted warehouse where Dyrdek runs his many entrepreneurial ventures. It also features a large indoor skate plaza, Rob's personal office with "bat cave" parking garage, a foam pit, and numerous basketball hoops. He also built a "hands of God" music studio for his cousin "Drama" Pfaff inside the factory. During the course of the first season, he also opened his first SafeSpot SkateSpot with the sponsorship of Carl's Jr. At the grand-opening, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa rode with Dyrdek on the world's largest skateboard. Fantasy Factory has aired five seasons so far and the current cast of the show includes Dyrdek, Chris "Drama" Pfaff, Big Black, Scott "Big Cat" Pfaff (Drama's brother), Chanel West Coast, and Sterling. Dyrdek was also featured in the video games skate., and Skate 2 (which also featured "Big Black"). During the days of Rob & Big, the two were featured in an episode where they were actually going to the EA building to shoot for the game. In Skate 2, the player is able to purchase an early version of the Fantasy Factory on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store as an add-on, allowing the player to skate within the factory premises. Dyrdek then made a movie entitled "Street Dreams" in 2009. During his career, Dyrdek has broken an astonishing twenty one individual Guinness World skateboarding records including ; Dyrdek's personal bests (some of which have been broken since) include: Consecutive front-side ollies: 46 (2007, WR) Ollie big spins: 12 (2007, WR) Consecutive nollie kickflips: 73 (2007, WR) 360-degree kickflips in one minute: 12 (2007, WR) Heel flips in one minute: 15 (2007, WR) Consecutive ollies: 215 (2007) Nollie kickflips in one minute: 22 (2007, WR) Longest stationary manual: 49 seconds (2007, WR) Switch frontside kickflips in one minute: 9 (2007, WR) Longest 50-50 rail grind: 100 feet 5.75 inches (30.62 m) (2007, WR) Longest board slide: 100 feet 5.75 inches (30.62 m) (2007, WR) Highest skateboard ramp jump into water: 10 feet 8 inches (3.29 m) (2007, WR) Rob Dyrdek Salary How much does Rob Dyrdek make per episode of Rob and Big? $60,000 One can only assume that Fantasy Factory and Ridiculouslness only raked in more for our renascence man. As for whats next for Rob he has a new skate part in Alien Workshop that was released in 2011, and says he plans to continue skating as well as expand his empire, changing the lives of millions of children around the world via skate boarding.

Kerry Getz, "Nocturnal No More"

After 12 long years of dedication to the Philadelphia skate scene, Kerry Getz says Its time to close the door of the beloved Nocturnal Skate shop, located on 3rd and South st. Philadelphia, Pa 19147. The official closing was Oct. 19th 2012. Professional skateboarder and X Games gold medalist ( 2000 ) Kerry Getz took the time to remember the past, explain the present, and discuss the future of the skate shop he founded - Nocturnal. In an article with ESPN, Kerry Getz recalls opening the shop in 2000, the same year the X Games came to Philadelphia, the same year he won Gold in the Games. "My fondest memory is the first year we opened when the X Games brought tons of business to my shop. This helped get the shop get noticed right out of the gate. I won the X Games that year, so I was all over TV and in magazines talking about my win and the opening of my brand new shop 'Nocturnal'. This was huge for NOC!" Kerry Getz is from Lehigton Pennsylvania and as of Janurary 2012, he is sponsored by Habitat Boards, DVS Footwear, Nocturnal Skateshop, Royal, and Mob Grip Tape. Kerry states that the Nocturnal skate shop was never a profit seeking venture instead he argues, "I built Nocturnal to be a solid core shop to take care of the Philly skaters and support the scene. I never once made money from Nocturnal," Getz said. "I just wanted it there to support skateboarding and to supply some jobs for friends and fellow skaters." However, there was trouble in paradise. In any small business there are growing pains, changes to the business model and unforeseen pitfalls and expesses. Nocturnal was not exempt from these struggles, "When my original partner Tim Quinn left the business back in 2006, I struggled to find good people I could trust to run the store full time while I skated and traveled for the companies I rode for ( must be hard all that traveling and skateboarding, first class meals and hotels.) After a few rough years of the store getting used and abused, it was time for a fresh start. Getz explained, "I knew I had to seek out some good people to step in and help run Nocturnal and give the shop and the customers the attention and respect they deserve." As a skater and Nocturnal patron, I would agree that over the years it had lost its genuine and unique feel and almost became a Zumies knock off brand. Any Merchandise that wasn't Nocturnal was almost always ridiculously overpriced. The staff were helpful, when strongly encouraged to be, otherwise they stared off in a euphoric gaze or lost themselves in whatever video the shop was playing for the millionth time that month. Eventually the whole place felt jaded and Vans, Zumies and other franchises began to seem more appealing because of lower pricing and larger variety. But Kerry hasnt given up. With the recent outbreak of core shops folding under the pressures of the struggling economy, hopefully Nocturnal closing its' doors serves as an opportunity to refine the business model and celebration when it re-opens. "My future plans are to keep the skater run business going and to help expand it." Getz continued, "I'm actually partnering with the guys from Kinetic, which is one of the best shops on the east coast, to help me with the Nocturnal re-launch this spring. This new partnership will bring their expertise on all of the bill paying, ordering type stuff so I can put all of my focus on my skateboard and not day to day stuff that comes along with owning a business solo. I will be able to travel again and stay focused on my career as a professional skateboarder. I really want to thank all the skaters and customers in Philly that have supported Nocturnal over the years, and just to let everyone know that this closing is just temporary and we will be back harder then ever this coming spring." As a Philly Skater, I sincerely hope he means what he says. For one sub Zero and Nocturnal were two of the most iconic skate shops in the city. Word on the street is that Exit isn't doing so hot either, turning down multiple offers of tournament and event sponsorship. East Coast Skate Shops have it rough is difficult as there is a boom in the summer and a recession in the winter months. Al things considered, skaters, support your local shops. Otherwise Zumies and other big brand extream sports retailers will rob us of the culture we have created. - The Philly Skater Over n' Out
